Zakat al-Mal is a yearly obligation upon every Muslim having a certain amount of wealth exceeding a threshold value (NISAB) and kept for one lunar year. Each Muslim is responsible for paying their own Zakat al-Mal based on their personal assets and liabilities. Zakat al-Mal is obtained by multiplying the total value of Zakatable assets by 2.5%.

۞إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَٱلْمَسَـٰكِينِ وَٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَٱلْمُؤَلَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِى ٱلرِّقَابِ وَٱلْغَـٰرِمِينَ وَفِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَٱبْنِ ٱلسَّبِيلِ ۖ فَرِيضَةًۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ ٦٠

Indeed, the alms are meant only for the poor and the needy and those who are in charge thereof, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to free those in bondage, and to help those burdened with debt, and for expenditure in the Way of Allah and for the wayfarer. This is an obligation from Allah, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise. - Al-Tawbah, 9:60
